As more and more people are getting EV's and having chargers installed at their homes - so the competition is hotting up from the Energy Providers and the cost of charging you vehicle is seemingly getting lower all the time.

Below are the top 5 EV electricity Tariffs that we have found on offer.

Here we dive into a bit of detail about things like 'free hours' and free electric for a year - what are the fair usage policies, do you need a special EV Charger to use them or a particilar model of car.

1 Hive/British Gas Electric Driver Tariff

Off-peak rate 4p/kWh when a Hive EV charger is paired with the Driver Tariff

Using the SmartCharge app it works out the cheapest and greenest time to charge your EV - you just have to make sure it's plugged in and enabled.

Requires a Hive EO Mini (either tethered or untethered) which we can supply and fit for you.

Additional benefits: Free driving for the first 12 months - when you have the Hive EV charger and sign up for any British Gas Tariff (although we would recommend the Driver Tariff) - subject to a fair usage policy of 2290kWh (other terms apply)

The free electricity is only for energy used by your charger - but the low tariff of 4p/kWh in the off peak hours can be used by your other household appliances (and even a Battery if you have one).

2 E.ON Next Drive

Off-peak rate 6.7p/kWh (midnight to 7am)

100% Renewable energy

Fixed rate for 1 year

No Exit fees

Requires smart meter (will be installed free if you don't have one)

Additional benefits: Free 1 year subscription to Zoom EV which offers discounts on public charging, parking and more - access to the E.ON Drive Comfort app with discounted public charging rates at 20,000 UK chargers and over 500,000 across Europe.

3 OVO Energy Charge Anytime

EV Charging rate 7p/kWh (EV Charging only, via smart charger/app)

Either a compatible vehicle or charger (Andersen, Hypervolt or Indra - we can supply and fit any of these) for compatible vehicles check the OVO website.

The cheaper rate electricity is only for that suppplied via the EV charger and requires a smart meter (which they will fit for free)

4 Octopus Energy Intelligent Go

Off-peak rate 7p/kWh (usually from 23:30-05:30 but can vary)

Requires a compatible EV charger or Vehicle - click below for details.

Energy at the off peak rate can be used for any purpose - so you can schedule things like dishwashers and washing machines to come on overnight - or - if you have a battery - then you can fully charge it for less - and use it in your home when the electricity cost is higher (you can even chose to sell your stored energy back to Octopus at a profit when demand on the grid is high)

5 Scottish Power EV Saver

Off-peak rate 7.2p/kWh (midnight to 5:00am)

100% renewable energy

Existing customers only (you have to switch first and then change plan)

Recommended chargers: Easee, Wallbox and Indra (we can supply and fit all of these)

Look before you leap!

As with all these types of things - whilst we have endeavoured to offer fair and well researched advice in this Blog - the devil is in the detail and we would urge you to enquire with the various electricity providers to ensure eligibility and suitablility of each tariff for your own cricumstances.

It goes without saying that we at EV Electrical would welcome the opportunity to help you purchase and install an EV charger at your home.

We are fully authorised installers for all major brands of EV Charge points and are OZEV Authorized Installers - meaning that we can access the government grants. Whilst these are open mostly to businesses and schools - some shared ownership households may be able to obtain a grant of £350 through the scheme.
